Hey guys,

I'm 19 and looking for my Mk2 Golf GTi 8v, unfortunately I don't have any no claims bonus but have been driving for 2 years as a named driver and now I want to be the main driver. I have a lot going for me (A class postcode, never claimed etc) however I don't seem to be getting any realistic quotes through on insurance. I'm not looking to modify the car, just keeping it clean and OEM until I finish uni.

Am I being too optimistic in getting a "reasonable" quote? Very happy to be third party fire and theft, as this is what the Polo is on. Can anyone recommend any companies? My dad (who is the main driver on the polo) has 5 years NCB, but despite adding him as named it makes little difference. More details include:

19
Mk2 Golf GTi 8v
Pass plus full licence
A class postcode
Software Analyst as job
Father with 5 years NCB
Mother with 0ncb as she doesn't have a second policy

Can anyone help me out or give me some advice? Best I've had is £1400 if I fit a CAT 1 Thatcham alarm (happy to do though), but this is the first few quotes (HIC wanted 4k!) and reckon I could bounce some companies off one another for price. I wasn't expecting mega cheap, but £3-4k is a joke for a car worth a grand!

Daz

Tell me about it, I reckon I can look at £1200 if I put the tracker on. Have you still got the Mk2 matty? I need to get myself down to the meets again, haven't been in a good couple of months (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleeping.gif)

Thats my gfs car but yea we have still got it. Have you tried the the insurance link on the forum they should give you a good deal.. Yea pop along to the meet. Like i said insurance has gone through the roof to pay for the cost of uninsured drivers crashing into insured drivers. So they think its a good idea to put the price up of insurancevfor those who can afford it.

Thats just stupid the reason why most dont insure is because they cant afford it. So making it more expesive will make it even worse (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unhappy.gif) Retards!!!!

I've not tried them yet but I'm sure it says you have to be 19 and have a years NCB, as I dont have 1 years NCB then i'm not eligible? It seems that the only way to get a good price is to fit the tracker, how hard is it to fit one of these? I need a Mk2 in my life :(

as already said mate, what ever you have in your favour being 19 ,with or without no claims , will wipe all of that out n then some.

then add in the words "golf" and "gti" and ur unfortunately goin to get hammered.

i would be very suprised if you get anything near a grand, but just gotta bite the bullit if u wanna get ur own no claims bud.

u shud be able to get a decent ish drop after a year

try footman james insurance all the kids on ed38 are using them with 20vt mk2s, u might have to have it on a classic car policy though.

I'll have to try them, I really want to get it down to about £1200 as this is "reasonable" considering my age and NCB.

Can anyone recommend a CAT 1 Thatcham alarm? I would need to have one installed with a certificate to get the premium cheaper, it will drop even lower if it has an immobilisor. With a bit of negotiation I reckon I could be looking at just over a g, which is what I want really.

I've used TOAD immobilisers in the past which have worked well

as for full cat1's i have always gone for the clifford full closure systems, always good IMO

not the cheapest, but u pay for what you get.

try mobile audio in worcs. They used to be down lowersmoor, but have closed there but stil believe they are in another location in worcs! They used to do all the tracker, security systems for listers !

I use Footman James for my mk2, think anything over 20years for a Golf is classed as a classic for them. However I think they will not cover you on classic til your 25, but give them a try:

Personally I've always struggled with HIC although I do try them every year. With the mk4 (Gti with a 320bhp limit) I use Brentacre:

I've heard they are now up near the Mercedes Dealer, on the industrial estate behind it, but never been able to find them!

call a company called sky insurance (not the tv pepole) they have gave me 2 very VERY good quotes,
im only 20 and have 0 no claims and they have insured me on my g40 for 1600,and before them the cheapest i could find was................£3600, no joke.
call them tell them your a member of the honda integra type r dc2 owners club and they will give you a %10 discount, they dont ask for any details of your mebership as its just a free forum (if they doo want your username just say its your first name and then add some crap like dc2 on the end of it lol)
so lets jackodc2R lol, summit like that)

its really simple plus there mega cheap, (they wont ask for a username as they aint all 4 times ive got a quote)

they do have a website, there good guys too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/banana.gif)

Thanks Jacko, they were the guys who gave me the best quote so far (£1400) but wanted a cat 1 fitted. I'm happy to have one fitted, as it'll keep my mind at rest but its just getting a cheap one fitted and signed off for the certificate. I reckon with a bit of negotiation I could look at a very good quote, club polo members get 20% discount but you have to be a paid member on policy start :)

im sure there is somewere that could sort you an alarm out, to be honest tho they are worth there weight in gold as they doo keep your pride and joy! im glad my new g40 has an alarm as i would hate to have it nicked.
try some of these pepole that come out and fit them for you (self employed would be the best as they would be cheaper) i dont know too much about alarms to suggest anything (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blushing.gif)
